Bar Stools Reborn

One of the items on my to do list, was to paint our kitchen island bar stools cream to better match our kitchen table chairs.

Here are the bar stools before paint. They blend into the maple cabinets and sort of become lost, while our kitchen table feels like it’s not a part of the kitchen. There’s no harmony between the two groups of chairs.

The bar stools were stained but never sealed with a gloss sealer, so thankfully there was no need to sand them.  All they needed was a coat of primer to prep them for paint. I used Zinsser 1-2-3 primer, which is a water based primer and easy to use and clean-up.

Applying the primer took longer than anticipated. Like an ENTIRE Friday night!
(My dog Molly is pictured in the background, and was patiently waiting for me to finish painting and come cuddle on the couch)

The paint I had originally bought was much too white, which I naturally did not realize until after the first coat of paint had been applied. Thankfully I had a can of cream paint left over from another project. The date on the paint label was from 2007, and apparently 4 years later, the lid is extremely hard to remove! However, I am quite the DETERMINED girl, because I pried the lid off with a pair of pliers.
My husband was impressed (I think) when I showed him the lid the next day :)

1 coat of primer,
1 coat of not so cream paint,
1 coat of cream paint,
distressed edges to match the kitchen table chairs,
and the bar stools are now in harmony with the kitchen table chairs.

Doesn’t our kitchen look more unified now?

Here's a side by side comparison:

Before
After

Much better, if I do say so myself!

P.S. Next project up is the laundry room. So stay tuned.

  5. Mom - thanks! I'll probably keep going until I just run out of energy.

Slicksister - I'm still thinking about the yellow. I might try and photoshop a photo first and see if I like the look.

    Karen & Berta - thanks :)

Lisa - Hmmm....stamps or wine might do as a bribe ;)

And I love your determination at getting to your cream paint. I don't know what I would do without my pliers...
